Been thinking about this a lot recently. You're onto something important that group selection probably implies altruism is maladaptive in the modern world.pic.twitter.com/DsjiF2Xepn
Yeah, that was the main thing I wanted to discuss! It's a point I haven't seen (m)any other people articulate. Did you catch the Richard Dawkins comment I linked to? http://www.meltingasphalt.com/addendum-to-the-leaning-tower/#dawkins … It also explains moral behavior in a way that suggests it's now maladaptive.
It sounds like Dawkins still thinks altruism is adaptive & stable, even if it's now used more broadly than its original "purpose" would imply.
Also, saying that reinforcement learning explains cooperation is question-begging. The ability & inclination to pick up social reinforcement (i.e. caring about status) is the most foundational form of "true" altruism!
I agree RL doesn't help *explain* cooperation (and I may be guilty of a bit of circular reasoning). The point I was trying to make is, "If humans are good RLers [which I think is true], then the prevalence of cooperation suggests it's adaptive."
