I believe Richard Dawkins addresses this point in "The Selfish Gene", but I'm not sure. If I remember correctly there's a way for altruism to be passed down because of siblings. Yeah, kin selection. I fully endorse kin selection as an important evolutionary mechanism. But if that's the basis for our moral behavior, then moral behavior toward strangers (in today's world) is vestigial/maladaptive! =/ Not sure if you caught my footnote on this:pic.twitter.com/Vr3Pfvvd9H

Is that why humans of different "tribes" can fly in an airplane together but different tribes of chimpanzees would literally kill each other on a flight?

I'm not sure. Probably a lot of factors necessary to account for how civilized we've become. (Sorry, not a particularly helpful answer I know.)
