It sounds like Dawkins still thinks altruism is adaptive & stable, even if it's now used more broadly than its original "purpose" would imply.
I agree it's a bit muddled (he was speaking extemporaneously). But when he says, "Reciprocation largely depends on encountering the same individual again and again," it seems inconsistent with the adaptiveness of the "be nice to anybody" rule.
