There's a great amount of inertia in who "won out" in becoming the gatekeepers of journalistic integrity. Now instead of retaining their place through honest competition, they largely spend time discrediting upstarts in order to keep their position.
I suppose you can say that the ability to determine "electability" is a great power that they wield early in election cycles. It seems severe to say "fake news" must always refer to pure fabrications; simply focusing on some issues rather than others can be powerful.
