Maybe off-topic(?), but I generally explain divination techniques by assuming that they allow the reader/diviner to project their intuition on a chaotic/meaningless tableau. Might be very effective, even if the process can't be taken literally.

Randomization is a great way to unstick one's thinking. There is surely a benefit in astrological thinking similar to Cage's composition techniques or Eno's Oblique Strategies.
