This is why I like Robert Greene's 48 Laws of Power. I thought it did a fantastic job of outlining how humans maintain and suppress power.

Beyond optimal number of meetings, it becomes a Prisoner’s Dilemma, where defect = call/attend a meeting & cooperate = don’t.
