Periodic reminder: Freedom of speech isn't just my right to *say* subversive things. Just as important, it's my right to *hear* such things.

freedom of speech seems analogous to freedom to bear arms—if we assume speech has power and can wound, it makes sense to censor sometimes.
I accept the analogy, but unlike actual violence, it's exceptionally hard to coordinate on how to delineate "verbal violence."

Given the slope is so much slipperier, we need to be that much more cautious about changing the rules. This is a textbook Chesterton fence.

I think this is where institutional censorship is useful. it's much easier to change rules inside of an institution.

I also wonder if being exposed to it is more important for our resilience & growth since physical adversity is rarer today.

true—I think this is why the law/courts mostly leave it to institutions (outside unprotected speech).
