Kevin Simler added,
it doesn't feel a little reactionary to you? Alexander has similar viewpoints but acknowledges cities have changed in the last 800 years
tbh I don't understand enough to appreciate what you're saying. I'm most just appalled at my past failure to appreciate traditional cities.
What's an example of something that strikes you as too reactionary in that thread? I want to learn.
well partly, i think its that its framed as "traditional vs contemporary" instead of "organic vs planned"
Ah yeah, I can see how that might rub the wrong way. What's an example of a modern organic city?
A lot of cities and "streetcar suburbs" in the northeast come to mind
Brooklyn is basically a city of a thousand 3000-person neighborhoods and follows a lot of the "rules" outlined here
Outside of downtown Brooklyn there are very few high-rises; blocks are fairly short and shops are right on the street
Mostly a grid, but highways, canals, zoning add irregularity and define neighborhood boundaries
Brooklyn's among the best the US has to offer! But I yearn for something even more meandering, organic, and human-scale (vs. car-scale)
