Not trying to be a wiseass, but I actively try to avoid having or navigating by taste. It's the reason I often butt heads with tasteniks
But then how do you write? Even at the phrase/sentence level, you must be guided by something like taste, no?

Taste is always social, but not all social things are about taste. And language is partly social. It would be useful on a desert island.

As for "guided by"... it's old-fashioned, but simply being mindful of whether something is true/accurate is usually all the guidance needed
