Their premise is kind of self-defeating: if I can commit to using such app, then I can commit to not engage in activities they protect from.

and if I can't commit not to get distracted by shit, then I can't commit to use such an app

I think you have an abnormal psyche here! Most people (I suspect?) find pre-commitments easier than continuous commitments

I mean, you still have to continuously commit to stick to your precommitment, so I don't see any difference between the two.

Freedom lets you set policies that run continuously (e.g., no social or news between 11pm and 11am). I'm finding it really helpful.

but the ability to stick to such commitment depends on ability to enforce it in the moment. If you believe that you'll be able to, then

... you'll be able to (and as a side effect, even a temptation to renege on this commitment will likely not be present)

but if you don't have self-credibility, then the precommitment will be continuously tested and will likely fail

I thiiiink so...? Although when the commitment is asymmetric (easy to get into, harder to get out of), it changes the calculus.

Yes…I use Vitamin R to kickstart the mode. It’s easy to forget what y’re supposed to be doing if not in mode. In mode, I don’t need the app.
