Monotheism is not a claim about number—it is a claim about the ultimate moral unity of existence.
I guess I took him as arguing for a kind of moral unity or monism. And yet his approach doesn't seem very "godly."

I think he treated the goal as a given (increased happiness, or something similar), and argued science could handle the rest.

So that goal is actually the morality he's endorsing—which works for me. The question is whether it ignores relevant factors.
