Monotheism is not a claim about number—it is a claim about the ultimate moral unity of existence.
I remember being pretty attracted to it, but that was half my intellectual life ago, so I take that with a grain of salt.

I guess I took him as arguing for a kind of moral unity or monism. And yet his approach doesn't seem very "godly."

I think he treated the goal as a given (increased happiness, or something similar), and argued science could handle the rest.
