Do widely followed, widely hated people know that their endorsement is counterproductive? Or is their ego large enough to believe otherwise?
They get more loyalty points from pandering to their base than they lose in expected utilons from a backfiring endorsement.

Good point. On top of this any perceived unfairness in the backfiring should additionally cement their group's loyalty.
