First thought — this is sorely underappreciated: "While making money yourself confers status, being given it doesn't."
Few people are starving or seriously wanting; most just want respect, and raw handouts do little to help.

I also like the insight that increasing meritocracy leaves some communities really impoverished, status-wise.
