Why do we 'take' looks and 'steal' glances, but 'give' and even 'pay' attention? (I worry the answer is too profound for me to fathom.)
@nouswaves That's a great example. It's like the army is telling you, "Your attention belongs to us now." (Or at least to your superiors.)

@KevinSimler also consider "he's very attentive" vs "I love the way he looks at me". Attention is service. Looking is personal consumption -
