@KevinSimler I'm guessing but maybe because they normally grow in rainforests where they need to be tall to reach the light.

@evokit also, shouldn't shorter trees outcompete taller ones over just a few generations (in that valley)? yet it's the world's tallest palm -
@KevinSimler Could have had dense forest. These are v old tress from before logging. Probably have zero timber value.
