I clearly had in mind the process of trying to "make it" in the academic world. Round 1 is getting into college, round 2 is getting into grad school, round 3 is getting a postdoc, etc. But there are probably lots of "professional games" that are like this.

For example, the process of applying for grants: every application depends on your reputation, which is built on past grants, etc.
