Wait, so if Pablo Escobar wanted to give $1M to help Bill Gates end disease in Africa, then for Gates to accept the money would be "a breathtaking betrayal" of Escobar's murder victims? How does that make any sense?https://twitter.com/kate_manne/status/1170813110535512066 …

This is basically arguing that when a rich person does horrible things, it is essential that their heirs get all their money, and horrible for any charities to get it instead. Why are people so obsessed with preserving rich scumbags' estates for their heirs?

Come on guys... accepting donations from Epstein won him social influence and easier access to victims. Seriously, if you do not understand this you should not be talking about this issue.

Social influence, sure. But if you think you get access to child sex trafficking by hanging out at the MIT Media Lab...you have a very very strange and wrong impression of the MIT Media Lab.

For fuck's sake dude. It's the social influence itself that's the issue and leads to easier access to victims. Never thought in a million years I'd have to spell that out...

You have not yet proposed a plausible mechanism by which being more popular at MIT helps someone find child prostitutes/slaves. I think those worlds are completely disconnected. (Unless by victims you mean participants, like Bill Clinton.)

I’m pretty sympathetic to your original tweet Patri, but think Kyle has it right w/r/t influence ⟶ greater ability to do harm. Basically any form of power, even soft/social influence, makes it easier for a person to do what he wants.

Re abuse in particular, Meredith Patterson paints a compelling picture of how abusers use influence within a social graph to keep victims (and their would-be allies) from coordinating with each other:https://status451.com/2016/08/09/too-late-for-the-pebbles-to-vote-part-1/ …
