I'm surprised by this poll! I answered 'yes, but with limits', because that seems like a pretty accurate description of what we already do by choosing our clothing, hair style, etc. I figured most people would think the same. If you're in the 'no' camp, care to explain why?https://twitter.com/Aella_Girl/status/1168330894614175744 …

We live in a simulation. People can edit their minds (e.g., removing memories, depression, fatigue). Would you support a law that allowed people to edit other people's images of them? (E.g., editing people's views to see you as your preferred gender/more attractive/extroverted)

I don’t care if we live in a simulation, I still want sovereignty over my own mind. Letting other people edit the contents of my mind seems exceptionally invasive, brings up thoughts of 1984, etc.

Interesting! And this hypothetical seems very different, to you, than someone who gets plastic surgery, or gets a sex change? To me this seems as innocuous as everyone getting to choose their own avatar in an online game.

(More generally, am I not editing the contents of your mind right now?)

I see that there’s a perspective from which the two processes are functionally equivalent. But giving other ppl the ability to tamper with my mind (from the inside) puts all the risk on my side of the ledger.

Risks: (1) maybe the mental surgery has downsides/bad consequences; (2) whatever mechanism that tampers with my mind could be repurposed for things I find even less savory than changing your appearance; (3) you’re forcing my mind to contain a lie!

Like, what if you desire to appear 7 ft tall, when you’re only 5 ft? Is that allowed? I’ll go through life thinking you’ll be good at basketball and can reach things on the high shelf, when you actually can’t.

Basically, in my parsing of the question, I don’t see how “it’s a simulation” makes any difference to the scenario. Maybe I’m missing something there....
