Finally forced myself to watch The Great Hack. Verdict: my reluctance was justified, and I should have held firm. It vastly exaggerates what CA did, takes several of their garbage, baseless claims at face value and ultimately makes a pantomime villain out of a minor character.

Couldn’t watch it to the end. My favorite part: “look, last year, data became more valuable than oil. Data is the most valuable commodity in the world, and CA took our data” (2nd half of the quote is approximate)

Yup. This stuff can seem trivial, but to many of us it’s an immediate signal that "this is not a program to be taken seriously". Perhaps most of its intended audience wouldn’t have batted an eyelid, but it’s exactly those kinds of statements that turned a lot of us off.

Reminded me of this. This is why I can’t watch documentaries — it’s so hard to find any that doesn’t try to turn the volume to the maximum, and keep the nuances and contradictions of any situation (Wild Wild Country is a notable exception)https://twitter.com/kevinsimler/status/1155221980574097409?s=21 …

I asked @byrneseyeview to riff on the value of books vs. video. Thought this was a really insightful and original(?) take. (Protected account; sharing screenshots with permission.) pic.twitter.com/3Qan7BBvCG

Wild Wild Country was *exceptional*... surely there are other great documentaries?! Not sure if it counts, but Human Planet is way up there with WWC for me.

I absolutely loved that documentary. The mountains and jungle episodes were clear highlights for me, but I really think it’s the best of that genre

Now that’s a strong endorsement, adding to the to watch list (maybe we should do viewing sessions!)
