I started shaving with a straight edge razor recently. Each touch, each stroke is pregnant with the possibility that you might spill a tremendous amount of blood. It forces you to become intimate with your hands, your skin, your breathing. I'd say it's the opposite of rote memory

Yes but! Where you cannot afford to be wrong, you will also never learn about it. You'll mostly just get fuzzy-headed, distracted, angry, sleepy, or something like it, if ever you really try to look. Learning happens where there are exciting but acceptable risks.
