I made commitment to myself to avoid blogging about abstract theory for a while But the consensus that attention is the primary form of social capital and thus it is zero sum is one id push back on strongly. The primary form of social capital is trust. And it is positive sumhttps://twitter.com/kevinakwok/status/1165940047075409920 …

I think attention is a form of it, which has become more scarce and thus zero sum But trust is a function of social capital too. And is not zero sum and we have lots of ways to go and is high leverage in what it enables

Strongly endorse breaking that commitment to yourself :P I’ve helped perpetuate the “status is zero sum” idea — although I’m generally careful to include an asterisk for trust.pic.twitter.com/kEHfuOEnxs

Agreed. Social capital as a common good and social capital as personal status are two completely different things.

What about gross status being the sum of status capital accumulated across non-competing pools/populations? Social status may be zero sum on a outright scale, but for the individual there is merit in a smaller pond of reference or context.

As an example there is the excerpt covered in the Undoing Project - Michael Lewis, where they are comparing A to B to C and determining preferences. But each pair comparison brings about a different dimension of focus for comparison. Coffee, Tea, Hot Choc was the example.
