Exactly my thoughts! Although in the example of Japan that I used, there is minimal divergence within society yet a very firm rejection of those that do end up falling outside. Yet the outsiders do not form their own out-group. What affects this dynamic?

Don't expect you to have an answer, just food for thought. The other train I was following was this: Do deviants break away because they do not see value in the personhood exchange, or because they don't recognise what has to be done. Probably a mix of both? Teenage rebellion!!
