And the less they interoperate, the more they’re able to diverge/differentiate from each other. That said, I think the general pressure is to converge and cohere. So you probably don’t get “speciation” from the personhood dynamics alone.

Exactly my thoughts! Although in the example of Japan that I used, there is minimal divergence within society yet a very firm rejection of those that do end up falling outside. Yet the outsiders do not form their own out-group. What affects this dynamic?
