I think the dynamic that Joel points to is correct. The more stringent and less compatible two groups’ personhood criteria are, the harder it will be for them to interoperate.
And the less they interoperate, the more they’re able to diverge/differentiate from each other. That said, I think the general pressure is to converge and cohere. So you probably don’t get “speciation” from the personhood dynamics alone.
Exactly my thoughts! Although in the example of Japan that I used, there is minimal divergence within society yet a very firm rejection of those that do end up falling outside. Yet the outsiders do not form their own out-group. What affects this dynamic?
