OK this may sound weird but I've come to identify kindness as the most important signal to me (currently). I used to be drawn to jerks and try to get their approval. Now I find the best/smartest people tend to be chill and open, or at least some of them are, and that's enough.

My kids are now old enough that I learn a lot from them. They're making their own models of the world, and there are a lot of interesting things in the diffs between theirs and mine.
