whoa. is it the temperature of the air, or of the clouds, or...? how is it measured? and how does coldness erupt in such a specific spot??

temperature of the cloud which is the air at that location. it's essentially where the strongest updrafts are. and as the air rises it cools (and creates clouds via condensation).

oh and how it's measured... it's essentially measuring infrared radiation radiated by the top of the cloud (or whatever surface is "closest" to satellite).
