I confess I don’t get the existential concern around deepfakes. Can anyone explain it to me? I imagine we’ll have a few incidents where deepfakes are taken too seriously, as we get used to them. But we’ll learn and adapt pretty quickly, as we did with Photoshop. Yes/no/maybe?
I don’t think this is any worse than the situation we have already (“post-truth” etc.). If it’s an event in front of hundreds of protesters, there will be dozens of videos showing the fake to be fake.

But what if it's NOT an event in front of hundred of protesters? But a single security camera (supposedly) capturing people going into an elevator or at a restaurant or whatever? What if it's Linda Tripp recording Monica Lewinsky or equiv (eg whistleblower)?

That’s a much better example! Still I don’t think this is going to shake up our democracy (more than it’s already being shaken). But maybe I just lack the imagination.
