I confess I don’t get the existential concern around deepfakes. Can anyone explain it to me? I imagine we’ll have a few incidents where deepfakes are taken too seriously, as we get used to them. But we’ll learn and adapt pretty quickly, as we did with Photoshop. Yes/no/maybe?

But is it true that the concerns with photoshop weren't at least partially realized? Photoshop has made it easier to mislead people, from Instagram models to state propaganda. There's always a community that sees through the fakes but technology keeps raising the bar.

It would be less of a worry if people didn't have a propensity to automatically believe what they want to believe. Stephenson's idea of the internet becoming a Miasma of fake news doesn't seem implausible to me. Truth is often only accessible to a small minority as it is.
