I confess I don’t get the existential concern around deepfakes. Can anyone explain it to me? I imagine we’ll have a few incidents where deepfakes are taken too seriously, as we get used to them. But we’ll learn and adapt pretty quickly, as we did with Photoshop. Yes/no/maybe?

I think the technological leap of going from not being able to synthesize video to being able to synthesize video is greater than from being able to synthesize video to being able to synthesize very high definition video, or 3D video, or multi-perspective video.

In terms of the function of neural nets, once GAN's get good enough to realistically model arbitrary 3D entities, they won't really care that much about the details of how they're cashing those models out as data. Long term I'd expect media-faking technology to win.
