Some examples of the concern:pic.twitter.com/7hLZPdA5zg

The part i dont get is there is a very simple technological fix. You can use cryptography to e-sign both photos and videos (as long as camera manufacturers support it). We could use that to verify authenticity.
I’ve heard that solution proposed, but never quite understood how it would work. Do you understand? I know the basics of public key cryptography. So, like, camera manufacturers would put their private keys on cameras and sign the bits as they come off the sensors...?
The concern is not the ability to claim X via deepfake, it is the ability to deny Y by claiming evidence for it is deepfake. Same as the Russian troll farms — just generate so much confusion and doubt that most people say “well WTF knows” and give up caring.
What’s an example of something real that you think people will use the “it’s a deepfake!” excuse for? Celebrity sex tapes are probably first in line. But what else? I’m having trouble thinking of forums where there isn’t going to be other corroborating evidence.
photoshop falsifies looks deepfakes falsify narratives that is the problem you are forgetting in your analogy
But text can falsify narratives as well, and we’ve been living with that for millennia.
1: More Of The Same, But More Potent (MOTBMP) is an effective innovation strategy that produces world domination. iPhone was MOTSBMP then Nokia's smartphones Facebook was MOTSBMP then Social Friendster (etc.) Google was MOTSBMP then Yahoo. 2: Video is a convincing medium.
it’s a very good point, thanks
We have entire generations of girls who not only don’t identify photoshop, but also aspire to the shopped ideals. To identify you have to look with any kind of critical eye. We don’t have to worry about the people who want to know; we have to worry about the ones who don’t.
I don't hear anyone worrying that deepfakes will perpetuate unreasonable beauty standards. The concerns are all about fake news. But you make a good point that we haven't adapted to that aspect of Photoshop
