Well, I *have* seen a few modernized book rewrites (usually terrible), but the actual distinction is that you don't *perform* an already written piece of text, it simply exists. Remakes/covers only make sense when there's something extra that can be transformed.

With music, it's performance, sometimes instruments/arrangement, etc... With movies, it can be anything from script details to direction to casting, different performance styles, etc... What is to be done with a text? Because of this, fanfiction is the closest you'll get.
