The post isn't about this, but it got me thinking about the evolution of optimism bias. There's a self-fulfilling element to expectations. If you want help getting something done, get people to think it's possible. If you want to be high-status, hype yourself.https://twitter.com/jessi_cata/status/1150883474934419456 …

Coalition-building is the human niche, and that's where expectations are the most self-fulfilling. So strategic optimism bias is probably innate-ish. But the self-fulfilling element is probably less important today than it ever has been in human history.

Liquid markets offer strong feedback from material conditions, far beyond any other form of social organization. This is new. Post-2008 macro focuses a lot on self-fulfilling expectations (bubbles, etc). But the remarkable thing is the baseline of *non*-self-fulfillment.

I can’t speak to other worlds, but the software/startup scene runs on social capital and perception much more than material constraints, and self-fulfilling optimism is a big part of getting a new project off the ground.

That makes sense – at the firm level coalition-building is going to loom larger as a problem. And venture capital is going to be pretty illiquid as far as markets go. But even so, we don't live in a world where Theranos could have worked long-term.
