What does it say of our society when young folks yearn for a technological achievement that happened before they were born?
I get that sentiment and entertain it often. But there’s another angle here, which is that landing on the moon was a singular goal, the likes of which we simply don’t have available anymore. Been talking to friends about what achievement in our lifetimes could even in principle
match the glory of the moon landing, and I don’t think any such thing exists. Landing a person on Mars? Kinda, maybe. So much progress is incremental, lacking a binary YES WE DID IT moment, such that even if it’s equally or more impressive, it’s harder to celebrate.
