What is a behaviour you find disrespectful that everyone else seems to somehow be OK with?

Would you pay more to opt out of the ads?

Haha, many responses to this: 1. Maybe. I sometimes pay to avoid ads. 2. Does one pay to “opt out” of being spat on?! No, you feel angry and spiteful and don’t want to give in to the extortion! 3. I often engage in small/petty acts of spite when subjected to ads on airplanes.

Agree. Have you read either The World Beyond Your Head or Attention Merchants? Both related to attention/ads taking over more of the public sphere. Just finished first, starting the second. Seems like you'd enjoy both.

Haven’t read them, but I’m certain I would enjoy them... definitely resonate with their central themes.

Is this one of the themes you’re encountering in your ‘summer of solitude’ reading?

Movie theaters too. I remember hearing “people don’t hate ads, they hate bad ads” often when I worked in the industry—but... when do people ever want to watch them?

I'm usually some sort of conservative, but as soon as the topics of ads come up, I go full libertarian: ads violate freedom of attention, ads are theft, ads are violence, ads shit into the mind, advertisers will be first against the wall (ok maybe that part isn't so libertarian)

(1) It's a bundle. Pretty much all mature products are profit-optimized bundles. (2) Even offering choice itself has a cognitive and development cost. (3) The less aligned our needs are with the company's objectives, the more likely we are to dislike the bundle. :(

(4) So unless re-incentivize so a new bundle wins, we’re out of luck. :/
