That'd be a safer claim to remain neutral on the causes of economic complexity. My sympathies are with Simmel that monetization is the essential thing, but there are other things (e.g. state capacity, which I compare here: https://www.liberalcurrents.com/myth-and-modernity-a-review-of-persecution-and-toleration/ … ) that you could point to.
I read part of that article, and it was so good I wanted to pause and make flashcards for it, but then I never returned
