That'd be a safer claim to remain neutral on the causes of economic complexity. My sympathies are with Simmel that monetization is the essential thing, but there are other things (e.g. state capacity, which I compare here: https://www.liberalcurrents.com/myth-and-modernity-a-review-of-persecution-and-toleration/ … ) that you could point to.

I'm skeptical, though, that economic complexity *as such* is the cause of differentiation, which seems to be a common-ish position in sociology.
