But also, how did we get all that value to lose if not from status competitions?

You know, I recently thought to myself I can’t escaoe the ego and the status seeking. I think the notion of prestige is a lot more sustainable/ good for humanity.

A more interesting angle of this question in my opinion: if you could subtract all value gained from ego/status competitions, how much of our current world would be left?

Status competitions sometimes have pro-social outcomes (or even personal benefits like going to the gym or reading lots). Status comps are potentially the strongest motive to produce these outcomes.
