After being a star high-school student and getting into the top program of the top university, I consciously decided to defocus from academics/career and focus more on social/friends/family aspects. Career hasn't been anywhere close to what was expected (by others) but no regrets

What are some specific decisions you made along the way, to prioritize your social/emotional lives over your careers?

1. During undergraduate: spend more time on extra-curricular activities. (Positive impact: diversified interests, better social network; Academic impact: I got into Wisconsin, instead of MIT/Berkeley)

2. Work: always kept a work-life balance. Positive impact: spend lots of time with family, work on a lot of personal interests, very little work-related stress. Negative: Didn't rise the corporate ladder.

3. Geography: Moved to India in 2000. Long before it was popular (or advisable). Positive impact: I always believed I would be happier in India because I grew up here. I continue to believe that. Negative impact: I'm not in Silicon Valley, which is a bit of a regret.

4. Job/Role: Quit big company, and started out on my own. Positive impact: so so glad to be free of the constant bitching/complaining about corporate bureaucracy/bullshit/politics. Negative impact: Income much lower.

5. Lifestyle business: Chose to run own company as a lifestyle business, in spite having huge high-growth potential. Positive impact: Happiness, because no people management (I hate that), and no stress of running a high-growth startup. Negative: no dent in the universe.

Observation: need to have strong self-confidence game to do this. Throughout all of this, I had well-meaning family/friends working hard to point out that I was making a mistake. Not always easy to ignore.
