      Julian Jaynes thought pre-conscious humans lacked the sort of agency and self awareness that we take for granted. They attributed the voices in their head to ancestors, gods, and other authority figures. Whatever the voices commanded, the body obeyed.

      Most people who talk to me about this theory think it’s cool but implausible. I don’t get why it seems so far fetched. Millions of people *still* experience the voice of God when they pray, worship, meditate. The Christians I grew up with always talked about obeying God’s will.

      Imagine an alt universe where it’s *weird* to attribute your inner monologue to your self instead of recognizing that it’s some mashup of your friends, fam, culture, etc. This is what the myth of Narcissus is getting at, in a nut shell
