I didn't know about the Good News Translation of the Bible until today, but count me a fan. The plain language is so refreshing. Here's a passage to compare two translations side-by-side. Reading NIV: 🤔 Reading GNT: 😯pic.twitter.com/YPFQoayzRg

'Prophesying' = 'dancing and shouting'? 🤔

It's fine to suggest that they may have *also* been dancing and shouting, but that's separate from what is implied by 'prophesying'. Why should prophesying be removed? Removing meaning isn't the way to make something more accessible.

i’m also assuming that something is lost with the traditional/high-minded language, and that using plain language rounds it out a bit / captures some meaning present in the original that’s lost in the other versions

admittedly this is a weird assumption that i didn’t make explicit, but there it is

here’s yet another translation that @JaycelAdkins found that translates the original word/phrase as “speaking in ecstasy” I strongly suspect the original phrase had no overtones of “foretelling the future”

The original phrase in Hebrew is "mitnab'im", from the word "navi", or prophet. It 100% has overtones of foretelling the future, the music setting up a prophetic mood. The Bible was written in what was common Hebrew at the time, though, so I like the idea of a plain translation.

thanks Jacob. It sounds like you know what you’re talking about (whereas I definitely don’t ;). What do you make of this note (attaches) from Robert Alter? I can imagine a culture in which the same word is used to indicate ecstatic trances and prophetic-type trances.pic.twitter.com/Sunhedo3Ik

Think of a modern day Christian entering a trance and shouting "Jesus is coming back soon!" Is this prophetic? Or just an ecstatic trance? Either way, "dancing and shouting" is very far from either. There are many Hebrew words for dancing and shouting that do not invoke prophecy.
