I disagree with that tweet. Civil Disobedience assumes awareness and intelligence about the issue worth disobeying. You can’t be civilly disobedient to a segregated lunch counter if you intentionally don’t know what Jim Crow is

1. There’s a norm, especially in cosmopolitan circles, that one must “be informed” because the issues are “important” 2. Some people find that norm oppressive (on ~principled grounds) 3. Ignorance of the issues —> civil disobedience of that norm

I see! Fair enough. I guess I don’t want people to feel intellectually oppressed. But I *also* know that “the price of freedom is eternal vigilance” (Courtney), so I struggle with the absolute value of disobedience with that norm since I find some virtue in it based on history

Yours is almost certainly the better position. If there’s any merit to opting out, it’s mostly in (rare) cases when the system is overly politicized.
