The fact that HP was well-written just reinforced its manner of character development & key plot points. Did you ever read Golden Compass/His Dark Materials? Curious if you have any thoughts on it. My recollection (which I don't entirely trust) is that it really honored the main character's experience as a child in the world.

I read the first one but don't remember much, tbh... I think maybe it leaned too heavily on themes re: brokenness. HP created an entirely separate world for its children to retreat to, one where even the physical rules eliminated many of their disadvantages relative to adults

Oh yeah, I don’t think kids were especially adept in HDM (the way they were in the HP universe). Still, I have the feeling that Pullman somehow rendered their experiences authentically — esp. the experience of being disoriented by the adult world and not knowing who to follow.
