Yes I’m optimistic enough about technology/progress to think we’ll colonize space eventually (and that it’s a worthy goal)! I just think people underestimate how hard it is to make a self-sustaining economy on another planet, and overestimate how much we’d benefit from doing it.
i'm optimistic about some limited inevitability on a long-enough timeline but incredibly pessimistic about the timeline. like, several orders of global civilizational boom/bust cycles at *least*, assuming we don't wipe ourselves off the planet first
In some ways, that's the biggest benefit, isn't it? It makes us more resilient to extinction events. Definitely in the "important but not urgent" quadrant, though, I guess. Hopefully.
