Here’s a weird one for you: I wish I could talk about all that’s wrong with modern/compulsory education. But I have too many feelings and don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said better by others. Instead, a request ⇊

If you’re on the same page — that there’s something inhumane about what we do to kids in school — just like this tweet (or reply and say hi) so I know who’s in the same headspace as me. If you have thoughts to share (from yourself or others), even better.

imo the biggest misses in modern education are currently: limited personalization (student : teacher ratios too large) & lack of real-world impact w/ projects

our education system is treated as a bubble apart from the 'adult' world, and while some distance makes sense at the start, I think it's important to begin integrating children earlier and in more meaningful ways

yeah that’s pretty central to my concerns about it too. dave expresses a similar sentiment herehttps://twitter.com/dmcdougall/status/1141939677102006272?s=21 …

David McDougall @dmcdougallReplying to @dmcdougall @KevinSimler @browserdotsysMy biggest takeaway is that I wish some adults in my life had previously tried to give me access to the adult world at a much younger age. I was obsessed with immunology and we lived in Boston - I should have been interning in a lab from the age of 11 imo1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

Mason 🏃🏻 ✂️ @webdevMasonThere's a very real sense in which nearly *all* children's work is just busywork — they're expected to treat it like it matters, but ultimately it just gets marked up and tossed in the trash. How is that not demoralizing? The sooner kids can do things for real reasons, the betterShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes
I really really like that angle. Don’t think I’d ever thought about how demoralizing it was (even for me who mostly enjoyed school) to have all my work destined for the trash. It robs kids of *meaning*

We should turn “Teachers designing excercises so that students can prove that they know things” into “Teachers designing ways for students to accomplish things”
