This is something I’ve believed for a long time: Humans aren’t going to colonize Mars. Or anywhere off Earth. Not for many decades. Why? MUCH too costly and dangerous. Who would raise kids there? Antarctica is orders of magnitude easier — yet ppl show no interest. More below:https://twitter.com/hughhowey/status/1134540120877649921 …

Agreed. The biggest obstacle for a viable Mars colony: really complex supply chains. We would need a very large set of genetically engineered organisms (far more compact to ship) to send colonists with the ability to make their own drugs, textiles, computer circuits, and more.

Totally. The complexity of our supply chains is staggering. Absolutely prohibitive to replicate in a hostile environment.

But 50 years from now it seems at least plausible that humans may have a large assortment of genetically engineered microorganisms and plants that can make many classes of drugs and textiles (textiles also usable for habitat constructions). Would shrink capital needs.

We'd still need energy and computers. If microorganisms could be engineered to construct photovoltaic material and semiconductors (and I have no idea how hard that would be) then 2 more major obstacles would become much smaller. I've been interested in mars since I was child. Supply chains are very fascinating. Ways to simplify, optimize, and make them more resilient (for space travel?) is why I'm interested in distributed production, 3d printing and sustainability practices involving circular economies.
