I think this extends to the other end of the spectrum as well: Super-ordinary folks also have more neighbors and ideas spread as fast. It is only the gated-community dwelling middle-class that is "immune" or "removed" (at least in India, where I live) +

this sounds exactly right to me. thanks for pointing it out there may also be a statistical difference where elites have more but weaker connections, whereas ordinary folks have fewer/stronger connections. and different things can probably spread in those different conditions
