But sometimes we talk with other people on the internet, and gradually form something recognizable as community with them, without the clear markers of place or identity-group affiliation that older community-formation mechanisms used.

This sometimes has an in-person component, which is not merely adjunct to the online component, so these aren't "online communities", they're social clusters formed around the new communication landscape and cosmopolitan way of life.
