With current tooling, it's just very difficult. Even for people who are comfortable in Javascript, the amount of work that goes into this stuff is ridiculous

I can confidently claim that great interactive essays are crazy amounts of work. I've done frontend ~full-time for a decade+ and my draft took over a month of frontend effort. Although on my team it's hard to separate interface work from experiments - they're often the same!
(author here) This post was actually much _easier_ than I expected! I was too scared to try anything like this for many years, mostly because of cross-browser bullshit. But then I learned React, and it takes care of pretty much everything.
