Fascinating idea. Do you think inter-ethnic cooperation works along the same lines?
not sure what you mean exactly, but yes i think the big universalist gods (yahweh, allah, etc.) serve just such a function

I mean shared ethnicity or religion serving as a focal point of cooperation in the same way distant kin relations do. Interestingly, if a universalist religion becomes too successful in society, then it loses that function as there's no distinction to make

Yeah, great point. Maybe when a religion becomes hyper successful like that, it turns inward. So the good parts of us are all on Team God and have to unite against the evil parts
