OK, this is a fascinating article. Go read. But it does bring up an interesting point about thinking. I found out recently that I’m on the aphantasic spectrum; my mental images are almost nonexistent and require effort for me to summon. 1/ https://twitter.com/sonyasupposedly/status/1123138137809510401 …

But my high-level thinking is in the form of a voice (which I consider to be me) talking in my head. “I” use complete sentences in there, and it sounds like me. To me, obvs. 2/

So when the article, talking about addicts, says they sometimes think of their addiction as a voice but “this isn’t literal speech, as in an auditory hallucination”, I suddenly think: hold on. Why not? Because a lot of my everyday consciousness is an auditory hallucination 3/

(Although I place the voice inside my head rather than outside, it sure as heck sounds like sounds to me. Like speech.) Which leads to another couple of thoughts. 1) Is this why I don’t particularly like radio? 4/

Because not only do I not get the pictures in my head when listening that the rest of y’all seem to have, might it be more difficult for me to think with other voices yattering at me? And 2) Does this mean some of you *don’t* have a voice inside your head which is you? 5/5

The point I was trying to make, IIRC, is that people’s “inner addict” (as distinct from their “self”) isn’t usually a hallucinated voice. But you raise a great point about how voice-like one’s self/inner monologue is. I have no intuition how that might vary across the population!

(the “you” in that second sentence referred to piers btw) Like Sonya, I wouldn’t say I have strong auditory perceptions of my inner voice. It seems more like words with no sounds.

Wait I literally read something about this this morning https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/pristine-inner-experience/201110/not-everyone-conducts-inner-speech … Small sample but interesting (2011)
